Chicago Hit & Run Accident: 48 Year Old Woman Dies After Being Hit by Hit & Run Driver

April 7, 2011

Ann Sconza was battling a drug problem and out of work for several years, her family says.

In need of money, the 48-year-old grandmother planned on scouring alleys for scrap metal with two of her friends Friday, according to her daughter.
Later that night, Sconza was struck and killed by a car as she crossed a Southwest Side street on foot. Chicago police told her family she had been panhandling when the car hit her and fled the scene.

On Tuesday, Sconza’s daughter, Isabela Lopez, choked back tears as she pleaded for the motorist to surrender to police.

“If it happened to his family, he’d want them to come forward,” Lopez said of the driver in a telephone interview. “I just want them to come forward and give my family some justice.”

Lopez said police told her Sconza was near West 38th Street and South Pulaski Road, just off the Stevenson Expressway, when a car made “a wide turn” and hit her.
